At the Rose Garden

There's a rose garden not too far from me. Last month (?) or possibly March when I wandered up there nothing was blooming, but today it was beautiful.

Mind you, I don't know the names of the roses. They're pretty, though.

At some point I'm going to need a filter or something; it was a bright sunny day, which totally kills shadow details.

Almost Georgia O'Keeffe-ish photos of furled flowers under cut. )

There are more pictures; that's a threat. ;-)

Guy Not on Skateboard

Sorry about the datestamp; I thought I'd shot six or seven of these guys, but this was the only one when I uploaded the memory stick.  Oh well.

Guy not on skateboard and skateboardMostly these fellows are trying to do the fancier tricks and not quite succeeding but not also fracturing their skulls (maybe they teach falling in martial arts on the side).

Also I should have blurred his face.

In Your, Uh, Grillwork

My favorite shiny photographic thing is the QE2 sculpture in Manhattan, on Water Street half a block up from Wall Street, where Pine Street used to be.  It's probably not as shiny as it was 30 years ago, though.

Besides, that's an expensive trip for one picture.

Skull Grillwork on truckSo.  This somewhat combines transportation and shiny; I had intended to go and get some shots of streetcars or BART and I may yet.  But I...haven't.  So.

Time Has Come Today

Which is to say, I finally remembered to take the camera with me on my walk.  I seem to have gone in the wrong direction for purple.

Way back when the earth was just cooling and I was in high school, there were a lot of clocks out in public:  Freestanding clocks on sidewalks, clocks as part of building façades, digital display clocks at banks.  Timepieces all over the place.  Not so many now, which is unfortunate when one has forgotten one's phone.

Anyway, they don't make them like this anymore.

There's probably a story somewhere.

No, That is Not a Boat!

A picnic table and benches after the Blizzard of '10. The East Coast suffered a blizzard on December 26 (Boxing Day; St. Stephen's Day if you want to go back that far), 2010, with depths of snow varying from "an awful lot" to "did we move to Buffalo?" and embarrassment for the Mayor of New York, who apparently did not realize that there really was a wolf this time.

Anyway.  That's a picnic table on the following day.

Amnesty is Still On, Right?

Because I kept forgetting to do this one.

For the Text challenge; it's a stained glass window.

More Fountains

It was late in the day but still not quite evening.  I found this fountain in the building's shadow and employed a few different shutter speeds (ha haha.  Sorry) but they all looked like this.

 Hey!  What's with the mist?
(It's behind the cathedral, but it was there when the cathedral was still a parking lot.)

Sundown

Yes, it's a setting sun, pouring down like gold.

We like it.

Avians in the House

So in spite of the fact that I knew the prompt was "animals" and had just used the first picture as an element in an apa cover a week ago, it didn't occur to me to use this shot as part of this aperture until about an hour ago.

I am assured that these are pelicans.  (In fact, the first shot I think was put up earlier.)

Style Kings

The first Friday of the month during the dry season, vintage car owners gather in Oakland at a working burger stand and show off  their rides, eat burger stand fare, and dance to records from the '50s.  The cars are varied, beautiful, and all ages (someone had a Chevy Malibu similar to the one I'd owned with a Very Clean New engine).  Some of them are Art Cars in the sense of being the canvas of the owner.Low rider fender with "Style Kings" in script (and flourishes).

If there is ever an auto challenge, I am Ready.

This car is a low rider, of the type made famous by War ;-) with twelve or so batteries to run Serious hydraulics to lift and lower the vehicle.  (Yes, it is on the ground there.)  I chatted with the owner last month (I think).

Two Pix

Kwik-Way sign (hotdog stand defunct for years now) It's a former hot dog/burger stand that's been defunct and deteriorating for several years because the owners want to demolish the current building and install a McDonald's.  The neighborhood this is in isn't at all on board with this (they cite traffic concerns, which are genuine), and no one is yielding, so the building has been an eyesore (except that it's been repainted recently) and would have gone well in the WTF category if I'd remembered to take the camera out.

It's the lightning that makes it "kwik," anyway (there were three Kwik Ways 10-15 years ago, but the burger business isn't what it used to be.

Aiiee! "Tis the Banshee!I don't doubt that Bush Street (San Francisco) has seen a banshee or two.
