very gnarly wooden structure of alternating small and large rings, nestled in the grass
I'm proud of seeing this, since by its nature it recedes into the background. From our back yard, this is the root of a maple tree. It's been mowed every 10 days in the summer for at least 40 years, as well as having had at least five suckers trimmed away.

A strange cross between beautiful and kind of gross-looking! But I recognized it right away, because I've got one like it in my yard.
